While practicing Tong Bei Quan I have noticed that version from the course is a lot different comparing to other versions of the same form. So it left me with few questions. First, why there are so many versions of same forms in Shaolin? Is it something that every school does, having their own way of performing forms? How to recognize certain forms? How much of change is allowed within forms without compromising it? Regarding the competitions, how would judges recognize these forms?

Personally I like more this version of form, because moves are graceful, strong and applicable. Even though Tong Bei Quan in this course is done differently I would probably recognize it's pattern, so one of my questions is partially answered.

I would appreciate any thoughts on this subject.

🙏

P.S.
Here are also some moves from Shi Deqian's "Shaolin Encyclopedia" (I believe) from 1992.

Hello there!

Just wanted to say that some aspects of Ismir's questions have already been answered in another thread. Shifu and Damien have explained the reasons of the differences among the same forms.

Nice questions by the way👌

Thank you Dimitris.

I have read that thread. It seems to me that most important thing about these forms is to know their application. Same technique can be done in multiple ways, in different variations, but outcome should be the same.

To truly understand Tong Bei Quan some say that it is also important to learn Hong Quan sets, Pao Quan sets, Taizu Chang Quan and Rou Quan, because it was developed with knowledge of these forms (by Dong Cheng in 1500s).
