Hello,

I'm looking forward to the upcoming seminar. I am new to nunchucks so I bought an octagonal wooden set and I am enjoying practicing with them a little.

I looked into the legality of owning this weapoin in the UK, and it is OK if you are a 'licenced martial arts student'.  I looked at licenses and governing bodies and all that - this is a new thing to me. It seems that often a school will be affiliated with a governing body, and the the governing body allows the school to issue a 'licence' to its students.  Is this anything that our school has any interest in?

Anyway, I am really looking forward to the seminar, and hearing more details.

Hi Jay,

Having run a club in the UK for many years, we never issued specific licences for weapons. Unless the law has been changed in the last 8 years or so, essentially if you have a weapon at home, it is fine. If you are transporting it somewhere, or using it in public, you just need to demonstrate that it is part of your martial arts practice, if questioned. We used to have membership cards for our members, but there was no specific requirement for these to be used.

As long as you aren't menacing people (I'm sure you wouldn't!) the worst you are likely to get is the police to ask you to move along to somewhere else. We would always train out of the way of main way fares if we were training outside, to avoid things like small children running up to us if they were walking by.
